East St John St - why double "street" in the name?

I found this street name in San Jose, California very strange... "East St John St"... I can understand "East John Street", but why would they call it "East Street John Street"? Turns out, the right way to read it  - "East Saint John Street"... The first St goes with "St John", and there is east and west for St John Street!
